How to play Cm7 on guitar, step by step

Start with the shape marked “Start here” above: the barre chord, root on the 5th string (3rd fret).

  1. Lay your index finger flat across fret 3, from the 5th (A) string to the 1st (high E) string. That’s the barre: press near the fret wire and roll the finger slightly onto its side.
  2. Put your middle finger on fret 4 of the 2nd (B) string.
  3. Put your ring finger on fret 5 of the 4th (D) string.
  4. Don’t play the low E string: skip it, or touch it lightly with a spare finger so it can’t ring.
  5. Strum from the 5th (A) string down, then press Strum on this page to check it sounds the same.

Once that’s comfy, try the other shape. Shape 2 is the barre chord, root on the 6th string (8th fret): 8 10 8 8 8 8. Same chord, different spot on the neck, which helps when the next chord lives nearby.

No barre? No problem. Pop a capo on the 1st fret and play the open Bm7 shape: it comes out as Cm7. (Capo 3 with an open Am7 shape works too.) Barre chords take everyone a few weeks. Mine sounded like a kettle for a month.
