The short version

  • Gm7 is G minor seventh. Its notes are G, B♭, D and F (formula 1 – ♭3 – 5 – ♭7).
  • Easiest way to play it: a barre on the 3rd fret, frets 3 5 3 3 3 3 from low E to high E (x = don’t play).
  • It sounds mellow, cool and smooth. Use it as the ii in a ii–V–I, as a softer vi, or vamp on it for funk, R&B and neo-soul grooves.
  • Gm7 turns up in 6 keys: E♭ major (as the iii7), B♭ major (as the vi7), F major (as the ii7), C minor (as the v7) and G minor (as the i7), and more in the table below.
  • Can’t barre yet? Capo 3 and play an open Em7 shape.

How to play Gm7 on guitar, step by step

Start with the shape marked “Start here” above: the barre chord, root on the 6th string (3rd fret).

  1. Lay your index finger flat across fret 3, from the 6th (low E) string to the 1st (high E) string. That’s the barre: press near the fret wire and roll the finger slightly onto its side.
  2. Put your middle finger on fret 5 of the 5th (A) string.
  3. Strum from the 6th (low E) string down, then press Strum on this page to check it sounds the same.

Once that’s comfy, try the other shape. Shape 2 is the barre chord, root on the 5th string (10th fret): x 10 12 10 11 10. Same chord, different spot on the neck, which helps when the next chord lives nearby.

No barre? No problem. Pop a capo on the 3rd fret and play the open Em7 shape: it comes out as Gm7. (Capo 5 with an open Dm7 shape works too.) Barre chords take everyone a few weeks. Mine sounded like a kettle for a month.
